Today’s rejections slips are bland and never tell you why your story/poem/essay wasn’t a “good fit” or “did not meet our present needs.”
But rejection wasn’t always so vague:
Why, really, didn’t we accept your piece? It was set in Nepal, your handwriting sucked, and you killed Holden. Deal with it. We’d love to see more of your work when it’s happier, more nationalistic, and you own a computer and/or have hired a secretary.
